Did you know that there is a war going on in your family’s intestines? You may be thinking, “Um, yes. How did you know?” It’s true, though. In our intestines, live lots of microscopic organisms that aren’t even a part of us. Many of them (probiotics) help digest food and get all of those good nutrients that we eat into our bloodstream. Many others (yeast cells, Candidia albicans or fungus) can cause some problems. Those problem organisms can cause us to feel ill, cranky and have a difficult time learning. We don’t want to have too many “bad guys.” We can balance out the number of “good guys” by watching what we eat. We can also make it hard for the bad guys by starving them.
How do we know if we have too many bad guys?
These bad guys can cause us to feel, well, bad. Here are some things these little yeast cells may cause. We may…
- feel sick all over
- have leg pains- It doesn’t hurt to grow. Growing pains can be caused by yeast overgrowth or mineral deficiencies.
- have canker sores
- have dandruff, especially “cradle cap”
- have stomach aches
- have bladder infections
- be constipated
- have athlete’s foot
- have allergies to foods
- have ringworm
- have eczema
- have cystic acne
- have dry patches of skin
- have thrush
- have sinus infections
- wet the bed at night
- have smelly gas (See. I saved that one for farther down the list.)
- crave sugar
Nobody is going to experience all of those things, but healthy people don’t have any of them! If you or someone you know, has just two of these symptoms, there is probably have too much yeast. But wait! That’s not all! Too much fungus (yeast) can also make it hard to behave.
- have sleep problems
- have mood swings
- be angry or irritable
- be whiny
- be depressed
- be hyperactive
- have a hard time focusing or paying attention
- be fearful
- have a learning disability
- have memory problems
- have a hard time calming down
- be excitable
- talk loudly
- be aggressive
- have “melt-downs”
Hmmm. Not very pleasant. Again, just a few of these symptoms could mean yeast has taken over.
Here’s the good news! It’s pretty easy to help probiotics do their job! Here’s how.
- Eat probiotic-rich food. You can actually just eat them and they will populate your intestines!
- Cut down on eating sugar. This is a bummer, but the yeast cells eat sugar and it helps them grow and muscle out the probiotics.
- Cut down on eating carbohydrates. They are just another form of sugar.
Probiotic-rich foods are foods that have been fermented or cultured. They include things like: sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, fermented pickles, kombucha, miso and one that we all know, yogurt.
When choosing probiotic-rich food, look in the refrigerated section. Sauerkraut, pickles and kimchi will only have salt and herbs as ingredients. If the product includes vinegar, and is not refrigerated, it will not be fermented, nor will it contain probiotics
When choosing yogurt, choose plain, whole milk (or milk alternative) yogurt. The sugars in the sweetened varieties interacts with the probiotics, substantially killing them. Instead, sweeten plain yogurt right before eating with fruits and/jams and keep those probiotics alive!
Mother’s milk is also probiotic-rich. It’s not for all of us, but babies have it good!
