Q: What is one thing that we can do to improve the health of our children and our own health immediately?
A: Eat raw foods!
Really! Raw foods are filled with enzymes and those little things are amazing! Their job is to help us digest food. Here’s how it works. Have you ever played Red Rover? It was a popular playground game a long time ago. Kids would hold hands in two long lines and call someone on the other team to try to run and break their chain apart. Enzymes are like that. They break apart the chemical bonds that hold molecules together. Enzymes don’t break apart every bond, however. They are very specific to certain bonds. Protein enzymes, for instance, are great at breaking apart protein bonds, but won’t be very good at breaking apart carbohydrate bonds. Once those molecules are free, they can enter our bloodstream and do their work. If they stay in long chains, they may be too big to pass through our intestinal wall and into our blood stream. We may be missing some important nutrients because those molecule chains aren’t being broken.
Raw foods have the right enzymes to break apart all of the bonds in that food. For instance, raw pineapple has all of the enzymes in it to break apart all of the bonds in that pineapple. Once a food is heated to about 118 degrees (F), enzymes are deactivated. Then, our mouth and pancreas have to get in there and provide enzymes. The problem is there may be some bonds that aren’t broken by the enzymes our bodies provide. Additionally, our pancreas is also in charge of regulating sugar. So, let’s help out our pancreases and eat some raw foods!
Remember the old-school video game, PacMan? Enzymes are like that, too. It’s a bonus! In addition to breaking chemical bonds, they also break down undigested material, dead tissue and help clean out the toxins from our bodies.
Do we need to eat 100% raw foods? In my opinion, no. There are people who do this and feel that they are quite healthy. Certainly, I am not saying this is a bad thing to do. However, anyone can gain better health just by adding raw foods to their diet. The more raw foods, the better! I suggest eating something raw at every meal. There are many choices out there! Just about every fruit and vegetable can be eaten raw. I love apple slices spread with almond butter! Most kids will eat any vegetable if they can dip it in ranch dressing.
Here are some of the good things you can expect when you and your children are getting plenty of enzymes from raw foods.
- decrease in anxiety
- better sense of humor
- willing to try different foods
- desire for physical exercise
- improved eye contact
- improved language
- improved sleep
- a Happier Disposition!
Remember, the more enzymes, the better the nutrient absorption and the cleaner the body is.
Here is a smoothie recipe that lots of kids love! It looks like parsley and smells like parsley, but tastes like apples.
